For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

Jack’s Mom — The Beautiful Dancer
When I was 4, my Great-Grandfather (Jack) told me stories of his mother, and how she danced to cheer him up when he was little — like I was then. He might have told me stories about her before I was 4, and she might have danced for him before he was 4, but I don’t think either of us could have remembered it.
She wore long white dresses, and gloves that almost reached her elbows. Her long, dark hair twirled with her movements. I imagined her as a ballerina, as I sat next to him on breezy spring nights (when he liked to talk about her most often), watching her pirouette and spin in my mind, surrounded by the light of fireflies, to the rhythm of cicadas’ songs and Jack’s baritone humming.
I think about her whenever I see ballet dancers.
She died when Jack was still a little boy, and he died when I was still a little boy — but I remember the beautiful young woman of the early 1900s, and how she transformed motion and ideas into happiness for two little boys; separated by more than 80 years time, but brought together by her dance.
